This is the story of the Seattle music scene of the 90s, Throwback Thursday, and some beautiful data visualisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throwback Thursday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
This all started on a Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Each week we have someone nominated to post their Throwback Thursday pick to our team Slack channel. It’s one of those ‘team things’ that everyone looks forward to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When it was my turn recently I posted “Temple Of The Dog – Hunger Strike.” It’s one of my 90s favourites by Chris Cornell from Soundgarden and Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam before they were huge in their respective bands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/iframe><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>and then I went down a rabbit hole &#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Temple of the Dog<\/strong>&nbsp;was started by&nbsp;<strong>Soundgarden&#8217;s<\/strong>&nbsp;Chris Cornell as a tribute to his former roommate Andrew Wood, the vocalist of Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990 just before the release of their first album.<\/li><li>Mother Love Bone featured two future&nbsp;<strong>Pearl Jam<\/strong>&nbsp;members, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament.<\/li><li>Chris approached them with the intention of releasing a couple of songs he wrote as they were figuring out how to continue without Andrew. Jeff and Stone were trying to recruit members to form a new band and eventually found two of them, one being Eddie Vedder.<\/li><li>Chris insisted on making them part of the project. So this was a supergroup before any of these bands achieved any substantial mainstream success.<\/li><li><strong>Pearl Jam<\/strong>&nbsp;would release their first album one year later and&nbsp;<strong>Soundgarden<\/strong>&nbsp;was just starting to get some attention.<\/li><li>The video was directed by Paul Rachman who did the&nbsp;<strong>Alice in Chains video<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8216;Man in the Box&#8217;<\/li><li>I don&#8217;t know why Eddie is singing from the bushes but he has said he hates singing to camera and you can see this in future videos and appearances where he avoids the camera.<\/li><li>Before they both passed in 2017 Chris would perform this song with Chester from&nbsp;<strong>Linkin Park<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>But &#8230; more interestingly &#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattlebandmap.com\/\">Seattle Band Map<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To illustrate the collaborations, band member swapping and community that exists in the Seattle Music scene there is the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattlebandmap.com\/\">Seattle Band Map<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img onerror="this.remove();" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1028\" height=\"523\" src=\"http:\/\/www.helenanderson.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/SBM-1028x523.png\" alt=\"Seattle-band-map\" class=\"wp-image-1193\" \"https:\/\/helenanderson.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/SBM-1028x523.png 1028w, https:\/\/helenanderson.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/SBM-300x152.png 300w, https:\/\/helenanderson.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/SBM-768x390.png 768w, https:\/\/helenanderson.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/SBM-973x495.png 973w, https:\/\/helenanderson.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/SBM-508x258.png 508w, https:\/\/helenanderson.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/SBM.png 1322w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1028px) 100vw, 1028px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This open-source <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.helenanderson.co.nz\/big-data-a-to-z\/\" target=\"_blank\">data project<\/a> was started back in 2009 and illustrates the connections between bands in the Pacific North West going back in the 1960s. It was originally mapped by hand on a 4-metre sheet of paper with 3500 nodes representing a band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.liveplasma.com\/artist-Pearl%20Jam.html\">LivePlasma<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking this idea one step further is LivePlasma. This visualisation uses the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/blogs\/aws\/music_plasma_be\/\">Amazon API<\/a>&nbsp;to connect similar bands with the aim of encouraging discoverability.
